League of Legends Rebranding
I created the gold texture referencing a lot to the techniques and stylization of metal textures established by our Splash Illustrators. I believe this is a key visual trademark that sets Riot's house style apart from others.
This is the initial silhouette designed by Pentagram.
Once establishing the new look of the 'L' I moved on to redesign the swirling ring of magic for the icon. I was able to reach this result thanks to the insights of Jessica Oyhenart.
As one of my first projects in-house with Riot Games, it was my *intense* honor to work on the new League of Legends wordmark and icon. My task was to take Pentagram's (https://www.pentagram.com/) silhouette design and give it a paint job that feels true to League's history, present, and future. At first I hit on a battle-damaged look that kept very true to the original logo many players had connected with over 10 years, however, as we considered how much the League universe has evolved and the way the logo would be used with more properties to come, we strove to hit a mark that encompassed a wider vision. So the brightness and sleekness of the design was made to look a bit more modern, but I retained League's heritage/authenticity by cutting the original logo's 'L' shape language into this wordmark and gave the gold magic-like swirl details to retain our fantasy roots.
